An introduction to Parquet flooring

Regarded by many as one the most luxurious flooring options, parquet flooring has shown a resurgence for homeowners in recent years. Not only is it well known for adding value to a home but it also helps add a unique & eye-catching look to any of your rooms. Parquet flooring has its origins in 17th century France & is a type of flooring made from small pieces of wood, which can be placed in a simple or geometric pattern almost like a jigsaw puzzle.

‘Parquet’ itself comes from the French term meaning “A small compartment”. The ‘solid’ version is made from 100% wood, however unlike traditional solid wood flooring it contains several layers in order to provide them with a sturdier finish. In recent times ‘engineered’ boards have been created, which is perfect for bathrooms as well as rooms where children & pets may spend a lot of time.

Common types of parquet flooring you may have seen include chevron or herringbone. Both can be used in a variety of room styles & the symmetry they offer helps establish balance into your living space.

Installation & maintenance for parquet flooring

Installing parquet flooring is no simple task & you should definitely consult a professional before trying to install it in your home. However once fitted cleaning a parquet floor is an easy process.  A simple run over with a vacuum cleaner (on its wood floor setting) or a damp mop for any spillages or stains.

Please ensure however that the mop is not wet in order to prevent damage to the wood. If your floor is in need of a deep clean there are solutions that can be used. If you have any questions about this, please visit the maintenance section of our education centre for more information.

Before deciding whether this is the floor type for you. It’s important to consider the main pros & cons that come with it. As previously stated parquet flooring adds to the market value of your home with its striking appearance.

The variety designs really capture the attention of anyone entering your home, for this reason alone it is worth considering for any homeowner. Not only this, the surface itself is very durable, simply due to how it’s constructed & provided your floor has been sealed correctly & adequately preserved, you will have a gorgeous floor for many years to come.

This only adds to the emphasis on the need to take regular care of your floor against the threat of dirt. Not only this but its advised not to wear heels on the flooring & take extra care if moving furniture around the room. This type of floor does not lend itself well to water either, so you must carefully consider what rooms are suitable for this flooring, particularly when purchasing the ‘solid’ variety.

In addition to this, you must ensure that when cleaning any parquet flooring your mop should only be damp rather sopping wet. Fading can be an issue if your floor hasn’t been covered with a protective coating. If it can be done within your living space, it is advisable to move furniture on a frequent bases to ensure exposure to light is spread out evenly across the entire floor.
